Health Briefs: GMC announces Duke partnership

5/14/2015, From staff reports, Gwinnett Daily Post

Gwinnett Medical Center along with the Duke Cancer Network recently announced a new research-based and educational affiliation, reportedly making GMC the only health system in the state to become an affiliate of the network.

“Our affiliation with Duke Cancer Network ensures that our patients have access to an array of clinical trials thus expanding their treatment options to fight cancer,” Phil Wolfe, GMC president and CEO, said in a news release. “For some time, GMC has offered robust treatment options through its research capacities; however, this new affiliation takes our program to a new level.”

The affiliation with Duke will provide GMC membership into the National Cancer Institute’s Alliance for Clinical Trials. Duke Cancer Institute was established and designated by NCI as one of the first comprehensive cancer centers. Through the network, DCI offers patients and their providers access to the state-of-the-art research and education programs.

“Gwinnett Medical Center has an existing infrastructure with highly-developed oncology and research capabilities,” said Linda Sutton, medical director of the Duke Cancer Network. “This partnership builds on GMC’s strengths and provides a host of options for those patients in metro Atlanta.”

Sutton said that one of Duke’s hallmarks is its commitment to excellence through clinical research.

Janet Schwalbe, vice president of physician services at GMC, said a wealth of educational opportunities will result for the Gwinnett hospital.

“Through the affiliation, GMC staff and physicians are also afforded a wide range of educational offerings provided by Duke oncology staff and physicians as well as other experts in the field,” she said. “Education opportunities will touch on a wide array of topics ranging from the effective use of new cancer therapies to challenges faced by patients following cancer treatments, among others.”
