Sheryl Gabram-Mendola, MD, MBA, FACS

Dr. Sheryl Gabram-Mendola is director of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Center at the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She is also professor of surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine, and a breast surgical oncologist at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute and is a Georgia Cancer Coalition (GCC) Distinguished Cancer Scholar. Her research focuses on disparities in care for breast cancer patients and methods for increasing access to quality care. She serves as medical director for the AVON outreach and navigation program and the Co-PI on the AVON Foundation grant responsible for clinical access to quality care for breast cancer patients in the Grady Health System. She has a special interest in patients at risk for breast cancer and as a principal investigator, is interested in randomizing clinic sites to receiving in-depth information on the breast cancer risk status of patients versus standard of care and then measuring the effects on the number of appropriate referrals for genetic evaluation, use of breast MRI screening, and chemoprevention. This research builds on pilot data that she collected at Loyola from a study funded by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Penny Severns Research Fund. From a predictive health perspective, Dr. Gabram-Mendola has formed a collaboration with Dr. Charlene Bayer at the Georgia Technology Research Institute, and is involved as a co-principal investigator on a study examining breath biomarkers in

Dr. Gabram-Mendola received her Doctor of Medicine from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. She completed her surgical residency at the Washington Hospital Center, and a fellowship at the University of Connecticut, Hartford Hospital. In 1996, she graduated from the executive MBA program at the University of Connecticut School of Business.
